The background

Koke Mill was located near the present-day Koke Mill Road crossing on Spring Creek. Today, one of the most well-known local mill names, Koke Mill, has a convoluted ownership history. Between 1837, when Jacob Early petitioned the Sangamon County Court Commissioners to build a mill dam across Spring Creek, and 1859, when Eliza Burns acquired control of the mill in a lawsuit, it moved through more than a dozen owners or co-owners. (James F. Reed, subsequently one of the leaders of the ill-fated Donner Party, was one of the co-owners at one point.)

Burns sold the mill and other property to Anne Burton for $5,000 in 1861, and Burton sold the mill site to William Keefer. Later on, William Keefer sold the mill to William Koke.

After 30 years of operation, William Koke purchased the mill, and his name would be associated with the historic mill site long after it was abandoned and ceased being active. William Keefer sold the mill to William Koke for $800 on May 10, 1866.

Before leasing, William Koke ran the Koke mill on his own for a while. He sold the site to the DuPont Powder Company around 1900, and the mill burned down in 1903. Like Carpenter’s Mill on the Sangamon River, Koke Mill became a favorite picnic and fishing place for the residents.

According to residents, parking is straightforward, there are pathways for pedestrians, and there is wildlife. The yards are well-kept, and the neighborhood hosts numerous community events, making the area lively. West Koke Mill may be just what you need if you love places with exciting history.
